Cate Cosi is a renowned exponent of the art of Majolica. For many years Cate and her late husband Gigi operated ‘LaMaiolica’ pottery in Fremantle and many homes in Perth will have examples of their work. Maiolica painting is a traditional decorating technique where very finely ground ceramic pigments are painted onto an unfired white glaze. This is a technique known as ‘in glaze painting’ because the stains sit neither below the glaze ie ‘under glaze painting’ nor above the glaze ie ‘on glaze painting’ Rather, the colours permeate the glaze and become one with it once fired.
