South of the River Potters’ Club began with a small group of pottery enthusiasts in East Fremantle in late 1974. The history of the club and it’s 40th anniversary were celebrated in 2018 with a retrospective exhibition which featured works by some of the original members.
The Club is now located in the Karlup Ceramics Studio in the Atwell House arts precinct in Alfred Cove where members have 24/7 access to work spaces and equipment including wheels, kilns, extruders and a slab roller. Monthly meetings are held on the third Wednesday of each month and members often gather informally on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays to work, collaborate on projects and exchange ideas and techniques. Applications for membership are available via the website and anyone interested is invited to visit the Membership page for more information. Membership applications are currently being processed quarterly.
The Club hosts regular activities such as raku firing days and an annual selective exhibition - ‘Glorious Mud’. Club members contribute to the ‘Empty Bowls’ fundraising event for Foodbank each year with the production and donation of soup bowls to be sold at the event. Members are also able to exhibit and sell work at exhibitions in Atwell Gallery throughout the year. The Club is based in the Karlup Ceramics Studio, a purpose build ceramics facility that has been constructed by the City of Melville on the western side of Atwell House and was officially opened in October 2022.
