Course 1: Mastering Facial Features

Discover the foundation of portrait sculpting by mastering individual facial features. In this beginner-friendly course, students will learn the key structures of the human face by sculpting the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears as separate studies. Through guided instruction, participants will develop an understanding of facial anatomy, proportions, and sculpting techniques. Each feature will be sculpted on a 14cm x 14cm fibre-cement tile, providing valuable reference models for future projects. By the end of the course, students will have built confidence in their ability to capture realistic details, setting the groundwork for more advanced sculpting.

What You Will Learn:

  • Sculpting the eye, nose, mouth, and ear with anatomical accuracy

  • Understanding proportions and the planes of the face

  • Techniques for adding expression and realism

  • Preparing pieces for firing and long-term use

What You Will Create:

• Four individual feature studies (eye, nose, mouth, ear) sculpted in clay and ready for firing

Meet Your Tutor: Marc Dimmick is an accomplished sculptor with a lifelong passion for artistic creation. His journey began in culinary arts, where he crafted intricate table decorations, including an award-winning 1474.5 sugar cube drum, earning Bronze at Salon Culinaire. He later won Silver for sculpting in pastry margarine, a medium demanding precision and technical skill. In 2017, encouraged by peers, Marc transitioned to clay sculpting at the Fremantle Arts Centre, igniting his passion for portraiture. A year later, he established his own studio and became a full-time sculptor, creating commissioned portrait busts for clients across Australia and Asia. His notable works include busts of Sir Winston Churchill, Sir Ben Kingsley, Sir Stamford Raffles, a contemporary Ganesh, and Robbie Burns. Marc has studied under world-renowned sculptors, including Jason Arkels, Philippe Faraut, and Rick Casali, refining his expertise through masterclasses. Drawing from these experiences, he developed the Zero to Bust course series, guiding absolute beginners through the essential techniques of portrait sculpting. Believing that teaching is a continuous learning experience, Marc fosters an engaging, supportive environment where students gain confidence and skill. Whether picking up clay for the first time or refining your technique, his expertise and passion will inspire you to bring your sculptures to life.
