Cast or thrown porcelain for carving and piercing. A participatory workshop
This workshop will introduce participants to various techniques for piercing and carving exploring various tools and techniques for the medium of porcelain. Students should bring leather hard vessels for this course plus a dried non-bisque piece. Students should also have a damp box in which to keep vessels at the correct consistency. Information re tools will be sent to students in advance. Any difficulties in having the right pieces on hand should be discussed with Peggy Stacy pstacy575@gmail.com/ 0411427264
What will be covered
· Discuss forms, clay consistency and appropriate thicknesses for carving and piercing.
· Best clays for carving and piercing
· Laying out designs on cast or thrown forms. Discuss suitable shapes.
· Introduction to tools for carving and piercing. What can we use for decorating our surface. Sandra will supply carving knives she makes. Students can purchase these. Other tools Sandra can supply and give advice as to where they can be purchased.
· Simple carving techniques, using scalpel blades and specialist looped tools.
· Open carving of forms
· Piercing techniques using blades, drill bits or Dremmel drill and dental bits
· Cleaning up carving and pierced forms
· Finishing forms and firing techniques to avoid warping
· Firing will be organized by SORPC.
